Cursive writing: This is not a curriculum outcome, but many children do like to learn how to write using cursive writing. I often print out practice sheets for children who want to do it. Some students in my class have already been experimenting with it. While it’s not in our curriculum, it is connected with literacy. Children will need to be able to write their name and may need to read cursive writing at times. If you’re interested, I’ve posted a great link below where you can even customize practice sheets.

Here is Ms. Philips recommended pages:

Below is information about the updated resources from The Literacy Component on the Governments K-9 website Learning at Home.  https://learningathome.nlesd.ca/literacy-at-home including 8 varied resources:

1. Two resources from the United Nations that gives students thought provoking facts about our current world and activities to help them think about future initiatives and what they can do.

2. Brilliant Labs

Helping students to think critically about their world and how to be a game changer. There's daily morning home activities, afternoon outdoor activities and an option for digital learning.  There's also time for Show and Tell Project Sharing!

3. Kinderstart Calendar

Great resource for students starting school in 2020-2021  -- there are many activities, recipes, books to read etc.

4. The Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries (NLPL)

This is a digital collection of books, newspapers, magazines etc.. that can be accessed using a NLPL card. Membership is free and you can register online.

A great place to see and hear Canadian Authors read their books. i.e Adian Cassie, "Best Dog Ever" and  Dylann Glynn "Rain Boy"

The NY Times has a section on its site called  What's Going on in this Picture? a collection of images with captions removed to help initiate conversations. Students can post their thoughts and even join in on current conversations with other students

7.  Scholastic

Scholastic has a great resource section as well. It has 3 weeks thus far and is divided into:

PreK-K

1-2

3-5

6-9

For example:

Pre K-K:  has a different topic each day, Animal Studies, Living Things, Life Cycles and Earth and Space to name a few. A child can watch the story and listen to it being read, Read it back themselves,

and after the story there are several follow up activities such as , word match, fiction-non-fiction, meet the creators etc.....

Grades 6-9: There is a Virtual Book Fest on April 2nd, where students can join authors Kelly Yang, Maria Scrivan and Debbie Riguaud from 3-5 EST on that day.
I hope you are all staying safe!
